Well this is the time of Year when most people decide to quit on their dreams and New Years resolutions. People often spend much of the Festive period was spent on reflecting on the previous Years events. At New Year many people spend time putting together their master plan for success and ‘World domination’ in the coming Year. Plans are put in place how they will develop and grow their MLM business and get to the next level in the compensation plan. Details like how many people they need to sponsor each Month, Dates of upcoming training events and what new skills they will need to learn. With so much hope for the coming Year and what will be achieved, why is it that so many people give up on these dreams so quickly, often before the snow has even melted. Often they throw in the towel without any real fight.
The problem, or killer here is procrastination. Instead of getting on with it and handing out your flyer’s, doing your surveys, calling prospects and all the other activities that will help you grow your business. Many people begin to procrastinate like a Pro. Amazingly some people can keep this up all the way to next Christmas! The reason I know this is because I used to be one of these very people, a ‘master procrastinator’. I would rather polish my shoes, wash the dishes mow the lawn and so on rather than do anything productive related to helping my business and financial future.
The problem arises when you venture out of your house early in January to begin putting your plan into action. You’ve arranged all your marketing materials and are ready to go. However, this is when you can begin to question yourself and your abilities. A little bit of rejection towards you business oportunity and your can begin to doubt that you will ever achieve your goals that you set. The ‘monkey’ chatter starts in your head and you wonder if you actually deserve to have all those things that you dreamed of. These internal voices can have a huge impact on the outcome of your dreams. They can even start to put imaginary obstacles and distractions in your way. The thing is that everyone has obstacles and distractions. The question is, how do some people manage to get past them and how do others come unstuck by them?
It is important to realise that you’re not alone here. Everyone, no matter how successful, has days when everything that could go horribly wrong, does go wrong. On studying numerous successful people the evidence shows that the difference is made by the persons attitude. It is not the size or type of obstacle or situation that’s important in the outcome. The results are determined wholly by the persons attitude to the problem or situation.
A example here is the selection process for the Military. On leaving school I joined the Royal Marine Commandos. During the 8 months of arduous training the demands are huge both physically and mentally. Around 45 recruits started that day with me but only 7 completed the basic training. There were far better candidates than me but many of them couldn’t handle pressure placed on them. You see it is the same ‘game’ and rules for everyone so it is not the situation that is the problem The outcome is determined only byhow someone reacts to that situation.
This is exactly the same when looking at people who start their own business or join up with an MLM company. The problems people face are very similar. Family pressures, lack of money and rejection from prospects, and he biggest enemy self doubt. Believe it or not the problems are pretty much the same for everybody. Virtually no one has succeeded in MLM without certain challenges. The difference is that they have kept focused and have reacted positively to each setback. If you start out knowing that you will face hard times then you can prepare yourself for them better. Success in MLM usually takes between 4 and 6 years. If you keep at it for this length of time you should have built up a pretty solid base of both customers and distributors and you’ll have a good residual income.
One action that can help you get there is to remove unwanted distractions during this time. A good friend of mine in my MLM business is a keen windsurfer. He would go and windsurf at every opportunity but he quickly realised that he would have to sacrifice this pleasure to reach his ultimate goal of financial freedom. He locked his windsurfing equipment away for two years and got to work. Was the sacrifice worth it. Well he built his business for 6 years, spent the next 6 years investing his money and for the last 6 he has gone windsurfing wherever and whenever he wants to. He has also bought a number of luxury homes in Europe and owns a large piece of land in Fiji. This has all been possible because he got to work and removed his distractions. He says it was a very small price to pay to now have dream lifestyle with total freedom.
Being aware of distractions is a good thing. Think about what things will distract you or use up your time and remove them wherever possible. In the beginning it is vital to put maximum time and effort into getting your business up and running. Lock away your golf clubs or whatever your main hobbies are. When you are tempted to waste time remind yourself WHY you are doing this business and WHY its important to you and your family to achieve the success you want.
Finally many people fall into the trap of waiting to get motivated before they start anything. The problem here is that motivation comes about as a result of doing something. If you are waiting for someone or something to motivate you, be warned, you may be waiting for a very long time indeed. Instead of sitting around waiting just get out and begin taking action. Go and speak to new people, deliver your flyer’s, call some leads on the phone, before you know it you’ll begin to feel good about yourself. Positive because you’ve achieved something. This will then motivate you to do more and the cycle continues. Before you know it you are achieving more than you ever thought possible.
So stop cleaning your shoes, washing the dishes and get yourself into production. Good luck and Happy Prospecting.
