“Its not failure itself that holds you back; its the fear of failure that paralises you”
Brian Tracey
We are now well into 2009, and you have probably recoverd from the Turkey. You’ll have spent a great deal of time over the last month reflecting on your achievements, or lack of them in 2008. I know that you will have your plan sorted about where you’d like to be in the next 12 Months. Taking the time to commit your goals to paper is crucial and I applaud you and am certain you will get where you want to be
Now you’ve set your goals its time to put the blueprint for ‘world domination’ into action. This plan will outline what actions you need to take to get there. However, this is the time of year that most people quit and give up on their dreams. Instead of getting off their ‘butt’ they procrastinate like a true pro, all the way through till next Christmas.
I can tell you all about procrastination. I’ve had times in the past when I’d rather polish my shoes, tidy the garage, wash the dishes and so on rather than get on with the jobs that needed to be done. Why does procrastination happen so frequently especially at this time of Year. Well people set out on January 1st with their new vision full of excitement. However, no sooner have they ventured out the front door on their journey than they are hit by a very harsh reality. They suddenly realise that this journey is not going to be as easy as they first thought. It seems that every possible obstacle pops up in their path. The problem is that when this happens they cannot control the ‘Monkey chatter’ in their heads. These challenges set the alarm bells off in their minds and they begin the negative self talk, telling themselves things like “I’ll never be able to do that”. If you are experiencing this, don’t worry its perfectly normal. In fact if your goals were to small then you wouldn’t have these thoughts and emotions so it is actually a good thing.
The question is, how do we get ourselves from here into a state where we can take these obstacles and challenges in our stride and move forward and achieve our goals?
Before addressing this it is important to understand that obstacles are a normal part of life and will always present themselves. No matter how well prepared you are you’ll come across them at some point. However, there is also some great news here. These problems, challenges and obstacles have absolutely no bearing on your success in the future. The reality is that people all over the world are facing the same challenges as you and I right now. What determines who will be successfull and who will quit is purely to do with the individuals attitude and how they react to the situation. Let me give you an example to explain further.
You have just recruited two new distributors into your MLM business and have given them a task. This task is to call 10 prospects and offer your business opportunity. Both of them complete this and both experienced total rejection. No one was interested in what they had to offer. Distributor A was frustrated, reacted angrily and decided this business was never going to work and quit. Distributor B feels great as she now knows that she is much closer to finding a prospect who is looking for her opportunity and will join her business. She carried on working, starts to build a business and now earns over $50k per month. As Jim Rohn would say “Isn’t that interesting” You see the the situation was the same for both. However, it was not the obstacle that was the problem, it was the reaction of the individual to the situation that determined the outcome. In particular it was the ‘monkey chatter’ that went on between their ears.
This explains why some people succeed and some fail. Even when they live in the same country, have the same educational background are the same age and gender, work for the same company, have the same products to promote, have the same marketing plan and so on.
I can tell you that obstacles in business are the same as all other areas of our lives. As an ex Royal Marine Commando I have been faced with some tough challenges. I can testify that these obstacles appear every day in the military. The Marines training lasts for 8 months and is regarded as the toughest of any force in the world. Yes, it’s physically demanding but that’s not he reason most people quit. The biggest reason is because they cannot take the mental pressure and begin to doubt their own abilities. One advertising campaign for the Marines states that “99.9% need not apply”. This is an example of how a group of individuals react on being subjected to the same conditions. What ultimately determines if someone will succeed in becoming a commando depends on how they react to the situation. If you find yourself reacting to obstacles negatively and in ways that could damage you personal development and business growth there are two things you must do in order to succeed.
You must put a high priority on the success of your goal. Many people set off with the attitude that they would ‘like ‘ to achieve their dream. This is not enough, you must be prepared to sacrifice everything and to keep going until you reach your goal. If your goals are not all consuming you will be distracted along the way and may end up sacrificing long term success for short term pleasure. If you love sport you will have to make sacrifices . You may need to lock your golf clubs or skis away for a couple of years so you can stay focused. Can you imagine doing this for a couple of years, yes it may be tough at the time but the payback will be huge. In a couple of years you will be financially free and will be able to play sport wherever, and whenever you feel.
Another important factor is to identify why you want the goal. Spend time digging down to reveal your true reason for wishing to have this goal. If your reason or why is big enough he how will become much easier.
As I mentioned you will experience challenges and simply being aware that this natural and to be expected is a great start because you will be more prepared to handle them. Nevertheless, you will have times where you get into a slump and find it hard to get the momentum moving again. In these situations it is easy to say “I’ll get going again when I feel motivated” This situation can be fatal to your dreams as the right moment may never come and you might never get “all your ducks lined up”. The problem with motivation is that it follows action. You do not get motivated into action you get motivation from doing something. This means that even if you are in a rut and don’t feel like doing anything the worst thing to possibly do is sit around and wait for inspiration. What if it never shows up! The key is to do something. This will make you feel better and will motivate you to do more. Just like Nike says “just do it”
